SAE Standard Tools

Hi,

I wanted to order a Mechanic Tool Set from Craftsman. They do have a Metric set only and I am torn between ordering this or the set that has both SAE and Metric. What do you think fellow DIY buddies. Is it worth it to get a set with both standards?

Hi,

Philippines import equipments from both metric and SAE countries. I have always preferred having both standards in combination spanner,organized as pairs 10mm & 3/8", 13mm & 1/2", 15mm & 5/8" etc.

One example I find having both standard handy is dealing with a one sized bolt and nut I can use the two without fiddling with an adjustable wrench. Just remember that the open side has a closer tolerance than the box side.

It also saves me buying another set and weighing down my tool case.

Most of the cars we have here are Japanese or Korean which use metric sizes. Only the big Fords, Chevies and Dodges use SAE sizes. In metric, you don't need to buy all the mms, as the more common sizes are 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19 for the smaller sizes.

The problem with SAE sizes in the Philippines is they are very hard to find. I have an old Jeep CJ7 and I couldn't find the necessary inch sizes. I bought some from Dau and had to have some bought from the US.
