I'm trying to mix some concrete on my own. just for some patch up jobs etc. I've been somewhat successful so far. However when I try to make small things from molds, like fill a small plastic cup with concrete, the surface finish isn't good, its full of holes on the sides, although it does seem pretty solid. I used the ratio of 1 part white sand, 1 part republic cement, around 1/4 water. Since these are just small stuff I don't think I need to add gravel in the mix. What should I do? Add more cement to the mix? or I should have compacted it more?

Try adjusting the mix. a 1:1 ratio of sand to concrete will give you too rich a mixture. Try 1:2 or 1:3 of cement and sand.

Rather than compacting the mix try vibrating the mix so that the air bubbles lift our of the mix.

I agree, 1:3 should be just fine. Vibrate to eliminate the voids.

Would a 1:3 mix work for outside CHB plastering too?

Yes Gary. That is an ideal ratio for palitada purposes.
