Nice find! I've been looking for that kind of tape. That is the tape now often used in the U.S. for masking.

ADDED:
The adhesive that get's left from the ordinary tapes can be removed with acetone. Pure acetone works best, nail polish remover is heavily diluted and I suspect contains other "stuff" too. You can get pure acetone over the counter at Mercury. They'll ask for your name and address though as I think it is also used for illegal activities.

the tape is not quantity limited nor would it stop the selling of the item. yung discount lang ang limited time. how would you use acetone on a painted surface after removing the tape without damaging the paint? verrrrry carefully? lol

Hey that's a pretty good killing! Maybe someone would like to buy my mine too since I actually don't use it much anymore. Normally I use a 10" sliding compound miter saw, or SCMS as you would put it. Consider getting a SCMS as these can handle much wider materials than those that do not slide.

Be careful of some bargain power tools from HMR, Makro and SOS. If you notice, most of these are from Australia or China. They are rated at 220 volts 50 Hz.

First issue is the voltage. Our actual CO voltage here in the Philippines is 240 volts. Some say a diff of 20 volts doesn't matter for power tools but sometimes continuous use can cause damaged motors, capacitors, etc. As in my Bosch cordless drill charger, it started out as a low hum emitted by the transformer coil that eventually burned and melted the casing. I ended up buying a new US version charger which was just as expensive as the entire surplus drill set.

The ac current frequency also affects the speed of motors and frequency-controlled devices such as clocks, VCRs, and other appliances with transformers. This is also why China made Compact Fluorescent bulbs sold in Binondo tend to flicker.

So sometimes a bargain is not really a bargain after all....

Yup, especially be wary of those with AC induction motors. There are posts about this elsewhere but it has to do with the reactance of the motor that results in lower mechanical power and higher heat output. A transformer is essentially an AC motor but instead it converts electrical energy into electrical energy (of different voltage/current values). So adapators of cordless tools will have a tendency to put out less power, and to heat up. So charging could take longer but more importantly such an adaptor could burnout.

So far I've been lucky. I have 3 18v GMC cordless drills that I frequently use, and 6 battery packs. I only use one adaptor to charge these and on a busy weekend the adaptor is always running. I've had these for at least 2 years now, so far so good.

The situation is a lot less perilous with tools that use a universal motor. These are those with brushes like grinders, drills, jigsaws, circular saws, routers, sanders, etc. etc. The reason is these motors are actually AC to DC converters. I'm an electrical engineer but to be totally honest I've not really done the math so it is up to you. I've a whole shop full of these that I use quite a bit though only as a hobbist, extreme maybe, and like I said so far so good. By the way, my compressor, table saw and drill press are all induction motor driven but these are all 60Hz motors.

timber715
05-09-2009, 04:17 AM
Consider getting a SCMS as these can handle much wider materials than those that do not slide.
I have, unfortunately the SCMS cost at least double that of the CMS. I have plans of getting a table saw as soon as Makita comes out with the new model MLT100. with that, I can do my larger cuts on the table and miters on the CMS.

about those imported tools, I am more concerned of the hertz it needs than the power requirement. 50Hz is really bad connected to a 60Hz outlet. it not only changes the speed it also affects the heat generated. I'm certain that most power tool that are rated for 220V can take 240V with little concern, these tend to have a buffer if you will, to accept up to a certain voltage. I'm no electrical engineer, its just what I picked up on the net. .02c

timber715
05-09-2009, 04:21 AM
also Incc, since this is a bargain alert thread, why not post a price, someone might just pick it up from you...

bbn
05-09-2009, 11:04 AM
... it not only changes the speed it also affects the heat generated.

Yup that's right but only for induction motors.

Digital clocks are also a no-no. One designed for 50Hz will seem to warp time by running 20% faster! The problem is not the transformer if it has one. It runs faster because these clocks measure time by counting the cycles of electricity. Just buy a quartz clock they are cheap anyway.

About the saw, the truth is I bought it for P3,500 when these Australian tools first hit the market. It made sense at the time since this was only 20% of what other brands were being sold for. So I'm kind of stuck in between not wanting to take a loss, and not really needing it anymore. I do use it from time to time like when I need to do a lot of cutting a bit away from the workshop.

We're off topic here so I try to get it back on topic by mentioning these Nicholson saw blades being sold. I bought one a long time ago and was quite happy with it. Their prices, even when on sale, are ok.

I happened to pass by Makro beside main st. cubao a week ago and stumbled upon a rack full of cheap power tools. Named TOOL MASTER, i bought a cordless drill for Php999, a bit sluggish but can do well on small drill works and screwing...a mini grinder and a jig saw with the same price also...

I saw a router machine cost at P1450, a 4" angle grinder at 1,200 and power drill at 1000 im not exactly sure about the figures but they were at that price range.... China made though..but comes with 1 yr warranty...may help as back up tools in case yours broke down.

While "real" tools are great, I'd rather be DIYing that waiting to hit the lotto :).

I know the aluminum shops use them yes by changing the blades. Steel I don't know. I have a cutoff saw for that. Most machine shops I believe use a power hacksaw or a bandsaw. Best would be to find an appropriate blade. I'll try to not forget to ask at the industrial supply when I go.

Probably if its aluminum then its ok provided the proper blade is used. I'm thinking about this too and a blade such as this.

Hey bro. I wanted to use it this weekend but it still has the British type of plug which I still have to replace. It did not come with an adaptor :<. One thing about it is that the body is fatter than others which makes it a little bit hard to hold. The body does get thinner towards the end so if used with the handle it should do fine. I normally don't use the handle and remove the guard too but I'm happy with it.

What were the prices of the Stanley planes?

For combination square, for comparison, the Kapro was P325 at Panda.

A spec that you usually want to know when selecting casters is the rated capacity. Yet for some reason, this rating is not commonly displayed (assuming it is even known). So far, outside of Binondo, and starting only recently, I have seen only one branch of one store (Ace) show this rating, and only for one particular brand (Creston).

I don't know if Binondo is any better.

been using them too for a short while. and while they leave no residue, they also stick very little, they are great for posting messages sa ref., make sure lang you use a small piece of paper or they will fall off. got several don't like em much, get the duct tape instead....

Promo on Bosch laser rangefinders (http://www.bosch-pt.com.ph/professional/newsandextras/news/professional-laser-rangefinder-52631.shtml) --- anyone have or used these, DLE 40 and DLE 70 (http://www.bosch-pt.com.ph/papocs-ph/Trade+and+Industry/Tools/PH/en/gw/Rangefinders/129900/index.htm)?

Not sure that this is really a 'bargain' but at least the discount brings the price more in line with UK prices, and with the US prices of the US models, DLR130K and DLR165K.

I was there Timber at just before lunch and was shocked that there was virtually no parking slots. I had to park at the very top of the building! When I finally got in, I asked a guard why there were so many people and he said that "Rustan's" was having a sale.

I don't think though it is a mall-wide sale. Han's tools is certainly not part of the sale.

Hi guys,

don't know if this is really a bargain, but I was at T. Alonzo during lunch today and I saw a contractors saw for 25k. Pretty solid construction with a cast iron top and extensions as well. 10 in blade with a 1 1/2 hp belt driven motor. Rip fence can cut up to 32" to the right of the blade. Anyone looking for one?

Well it just fits within my 1 hour lunch break. From my office it takes about 15 minutes to get there and park. I park on the 7th level at the stairwell that leads right beside Han's. Han's is on the 6th level but parking that level is difficult. With a 30 minute transit time, I have 30 minutes to buy and browse. I just wish the cashier would not take so long. Today I bought only one item and I was the only one paying, and it still took her maybe 5 minutes which was enough take a peek at the Makita thicknesser, table saw and miter saw, as well as the jet thicknesser. I suppose if I paid with a credit card, I could even take a tool or two for a test drive :).

maybe pinoyhandyman can do something like that ( we need to assemble a team) and the 5% profit can go to the pinoyhandyman fund and could be used for webhosting expenses, seminars and etc.

For battle weary tools I reckon the prices are way high. Vendor says still negotiable so who knows.

bbn
05-07-2010, 10:21 PM
Old tools are usually over built from my experience especially those from the U.S., Germany and Japan. These guys long ago mastered steel hardening so I wouldn't worry about them being battle scarred especially since these are only woodworking tools and not metalworking tools.

The problem really with the price of these old tools is that vendors usually benchmark them against the "per kilo" scrap value so at P25/kg a 1-ton machine will already be worth P25,000. On the other hand scrap metal prices, like real estate, nearly always go up.

Best though to know what to look for like for example the spindle of a drill press should have no play. No kidding, I've seen brand new MICs that do have noticeable play in their spindles.

Hey that's a pretty good killing! Maybe someone would like to buy my mine too since I actually don't use it much anymore. Normally I use a 10" sliding compound miter saw, or SCMS as you would put it. Consider getting a SCMS as these can handle much wider materials than those that do not slide.

ADDED:

I found a picture of the saw.

if I may...the woodcraft will cost you $100 plus $15 shipping so about $115.

For about a little more ($150)you can these more respected brands with free shipping:
Bessey:http://www.amazon.com/Bessey-KRK2440-Fixed-Parallel-Clamp/dp/B001HSO6V8/ref=sr_1_3?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Jet: http://www.amazon.com/Jet-70411-Parallel-Clamp-Cabinet/dp/B000F79022/ref=sr_1_16?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

They are even not on sale but the price are already at par with Woodcraft. I'm not sure if it's only me but the WF is sometimes misleading or shrewd to make you think it's a really good buy. Not to mention Amazon's great customer pampering este customer service.

I never regretted buying this product. its awesome and saves my knuckles alot of unnecessary injuries.

Also the thing does not seem to corrode, given that my other metal tools are corroding like there is no tomorrow.

Good deal ... one has to be quick on the trigger. To get Amazon best prices " Shoot First then ask questions later" when they drive the price down.

I actually bought this midMay for $51.66 on a trip to the US. Didn't know it was a bargain then.

But still haven't gotten around to installing it on my Bosch router and table. If I recall right, I need to make some kind of spacer. Build quality is topnotch though.

from sulit.com.ph

Packaged set of industrial grade woodworking machinery. 12inch conveyor belt driven wide belt sander, 4 inch dust collector vacuum, 15 inch planer, band saw, 6 inch jointer, Makita 2-1/2hp shaper table(metal). Not pictured is a U.S. made ShopSmith with many accessories. Google ShopSmith and you'll see it is a horizontal boring machine, drill press, table saw, lathe for wood turning (w/set of original ShopSmith turning chisels), has scroll saw attachment. Motor may need rewinding. Other extra motors, various tools accessories not pictured. The ShopSmith alone cost me more than my asking price for the package. All machineries as-is. Wide belt sander is 3-phase but convertible to 1 phase.

If you're in the industry/hobby you know the prices of machines like this from the dealers so grab a bargain and get them while they're available. First come - first served.

165,000 for the package

Won't separate, sold as package.

try to avoid the red B&D powertools this was the advice I got from a reliable source (I believe Moji and Ernie also heard this the same time)

Not that I am bias on tools but as far as I have experienced, always check the prices of the other tools as well.

The 30% and 40% maybe misleading as many vendors tends to jack the price up first and claim the discount so there isn't really a big discount.

Research is your best move.

Can't exactly read the photo's text but I went for a similar deal on the red B&Ds at Handyman. I turned in one of those broken fake Bosch drills (bought at a Chinatown sidewalk) and got 50% off a 600+W red B&D hammer drill. From what I recall, price was good. Drill is ok so far. Free bits are crap but would be ok for light duty.

Can't recall exactly but it should be between $50 to $100 surface shipment (4-5 weeks). So call it $75.

Edit: Oops. Checked my mail. Forex Cargo charged me $110. With these prices, I wonder if Golden's TS is now sulit.

I have a sample link below that show the true price history of a Bosch item

Also be reminded that there is an ongoing Amazon.com discount of $20 for the first $100 Bosch worth of items. You can know more deals thru...

for lcd tvs please check the power consumption...it should be below 100watts...

more than that eh hesitant nako..want to economize...

the newer 32" samsung lcds (LED type) series 7 consumes just around 65 watts!

these low power consuming lcds are cool to operate and might be good actually if you watch movie while the AC is turned on.

btw..is that toshiba the regza series?

i am also on a hunt for a 40 incher...gift ko sa mom ko this xmas.

me sony...75 watts lang consumption..40K din! hehe and no bracket..

yung toshiba yata laging me free bracket..

yung 3 year toshiba regza ko eh me free din kaso diko na winall mount.

thanks joey for the tip.

I'll check tomorrow night when I pass by megamall. Magdadala ako ng maraming bawang just in case. :p
