View Full Version : Use gasket maker With VELLOMOID gaket??
Hello ALL!
I`m changing the oil seal of the output shaft of the transfer case of my old jeep TOM. I`m using cardboard thin VELLUMOID gaskets (that i made at home) to close up and seal everything afterwards.
Is it a good idea to put 3bond or a similar gasket maker on the mating surfaces in addition to the vellumoid gaket to insure a better leak free seal? I`m avoiding having to re-do everything just cause there`s a leak!
THANK YOU :)
Patrick

vellumoid is a brand name of gasket paper
We used this with good success. What's ok about it is it does not dry up too quickly and gives ample time for application and then positioning of the parts before it starts to harden.
BTW I sometimes wire wheel brush parts surfaces for preparation before applying the stuff.

Jay, Is the RTV Silicone Gasket Maker just the same as the "Silicone sealant" used for valve covers?

Which brand? Lots of Silicone RTV sealants. For High Temp use , for Windshield, as Gasket Makers etc.... best to read instructions on the back of the product carefully to make sure it's for the right application.

I see, so the term "gasket maker" is a generic term used for many applications. Thanks Jay!

@ jay, where do you source a thicker vellamoid. I need 3mm for my bike. I upgraded the piston, it kinda raised everything up. I needed to raise the block to proportion. Right now I'm using multiple vellamoids it kinda work but I'm afraid it would leak out the water in due time.

Gasket sheet materials I just buy from auto shops then make custom fitting gaskets. Here in Pasay there are a lot of lined up auto shops on both sides of Taft Ave nearing Pasay Rotunda in Edsa.

what brand can you recommend for car engines? my mechanic usually tells me to buy the Pioneer brand black silicone gasket maker & that's what he uses on the engine top cover & on the oil pan.
