been into music lately and have registered in a number of audio sites locally. people there seems to want a stable tank like table for their equipments. so I decided to make another workbench, but with a twist. instead of designing it wor work, it will be designed to accommodate stuff for audio enthusiast. hopefully someone wants to buy it... hehehe

I wanted a slightly loose joint for glue to fill in...
should be perfect once it is cleaned. though the depth has to be adjusted(too shallow)

Timber,

Do you use a jointer or are those stocks pre jointed? or do you plane after joining the 2 x 4's?

timber715
02-22-2010, 12:13 PM
handplane to join, and handplane afterwards to clean. no access to a jointer....

beebeenator
02-22-2010, 03:46 PM
wow! I still havent learned how to use a handplane properly (or power plane even). Nor do i have a proper one to start with

its quite nice to see how all your stocks are straight and same thickness. I ll keep an eye on this thread

I've done little today, so when I got home this evening I tried to get some work done. marked the legs and feet to avoid mistakes ( I learned from experience ).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0207-1.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0208-1.jpg
then I laid out the mortise locations...

using a forstner bit on the drill press, I removed the bulk material and set the depth ...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0214-1.jpg
seeing that I got the correct setting on the drill press, I drilled the rest...

here is a little update on the tt bench...
cleaned up the rest of the mortises on the legs...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0236-1.jpg
and cut the mortises for the end cap of the shelves...

today, I had to attend to several things and had to buy some tools to help me in this build. but I did get some work done...
Chose the hardest and densest wood I have in stock, cut them to pieces and started handplane work. first I got them to the correct thickness and width.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0237-1.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0239-1.jpg
had to remove a lot, enough to fill a trash can, now that the loose tenon is in proper size, I can round off the corners.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0242.jpg
and they do fit tight, it actually pops when you pull them off.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0241-2.jpg
tomorrow I cut them to size and get some other work done...

timber715
02-27-2010, 01:22 AM
what? I forgot to take pictures of them? :o
well I did the stretchers, cut the tenons to size and dry-fitted them with the legs. looks like this now...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0257.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0258.jpg

timber715
03-02-2010, 11:59 PM
today, I managed some work on this...
started by laying-out the lines where I need the hold down screws to be...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0288-1.jpg
drilled a hole a little more than 1/4" deep with a forstner bit (it is for the screw head to be recessed)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0289-1.jpg
then I drill a second hole (10mm) that will go thru for the screw to pass.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0290-1.jpg
all done.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0291-1.jpg

timber715
03-03-2010, 12:00 AM
now, I installed the stretchers in place, making sure everything is squared. then with the hole already in the leg, I use it as a guide and drill through the stretcher.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0292.jpg
and deepen the hole on the stretcher...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0293-1.jpg
the stretchers then get another hole on the bottom portion to receive the nut.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0295.jpg
square the end...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0294-1.jpg

timber715
03-03-2010, 12:02 AM
and finish the cut...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0297.jpg
the screws are 5" long so make sure you got the correct depth...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0298.jpg

timber715
03-03-2010, 12:13 AM
assembly naman should be straightforward... the screw goes thru..
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0299.jpg
and is caught by the nut on the other end...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0301.jpg
make sure there is a washer on both ends.

timber715
03-03-2010, 12:16 AM
two ends now installed...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0300.jpg
one side complete...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0302.jpg
putting it back, it still fits... :)

timber715
03-14-2010, 10:53 PM
no glue yet, still need to decide whether I use plywood for the shelves or slats...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0399.jpg
but it is solid, sat on one of the stretchers, can carry my weight... 69kls.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0401.jpg
I have also added the cross members for the stretchers...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0404.jpg

Looking great Timber. One question: why don't you use a mortising jig with a router?

update tayo ng konti.

timber715
03-26-2010, 01:04 AM
started by handplaning across the grain with my trusty no.5 stanley(handplane).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0427.jpg
when I am about half a mm to the plywood level, I stop.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0428.jpg
and continue with a no.4 (smoothing handplane)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0430.jpg

timber715
03-26-2010, 01:04 AM
until it is almost flush with the plywood.

finally found some time to continue work on the tt bench...
found the materials for the top, cut in 4 feet lengths and clamped together in preparation to jointing.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0606-1.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0608.jpg
drilled pocket holes to add strength alternately between the two boards.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0612-1.jpg
glued, clamped with cauls too and screwed the edges together.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0615-1.jpg

timber715
04-10-2010, 02:53 AM
I was also able oil and stain the leg and feet with Red Mahogany stain...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0616.jpg
shelves were oiled and stained as well...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0617-1.jpg

timber715
04-19-2010, 01:50 AM
well its breaktime for me and now I have time to continue work on the tt bench top.
making the mortises for the leg tenons to fit into. hand cut lang para tight fit.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0755.jpg
I use a mallet and since it is a bit heavy, I got a smaller one...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0753.jpg
I always treat it with hardwood oil first before use.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0754.jpg
the cut is at the desired depth now, test fitted already, I just need to trim the tenons tomorrow and gluing begins...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0756.jpg

timber715
04-19-2010, 05:01 PM
today I start by gluing the feet on...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0761.jpg

and a handsaw...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0760.jpg

timber715
04-19-2010, 05:04 PM
trim with a chisel and a block plane then dry fit...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0763.jpg
a little more trimming and its glue time...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0766.jpg

it started as a project piece and somewhere along the way someone decided to reserve it, the specs were changed slightly to fit their needs... it is already sold Randy. :)
