I got tired of lugging and moving around the shop a 27 Kg portable welder. I decided I need to do something about it today.
I checked what metal is available but found none so prepared to go out and buy some. However on the way up the house I spotted some of these and remembered I still had some spare wheels left from the previous TS & RT stands build. What the heck I'll just build the mobile base using wood instead of metal.

Let's see if it works out. I have fabricated longer welding cables already and I'll just keep the welder slightly away from the action so as not to burn the mobile base.

Made a plywood table / workbench. I didnt want to use up 6 full length 2 x 4's (since its quite expensive ) so i decided to make 2 x 4's out of marine ply instead. Its just so much cheaper. But takes alot longer to finish. The project took around 3 - 4 hours (not counting curing time of the glue)
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6561/p4062412.jpg
2 sheets of ply were cut in one go... never used my circular saw fence this extensive before.

this is how it was before. Finally i can use my saw horses! and my stocks are not piled on top of each other.
Some place to tuck my table saw jigs under too.
Will add drawers when i have more time
Actually Bee, plywood can cost more than equivalent lumber. This is because plywood only has half the strength of lumber of the same dimensions. For example, if a design requires a 1"x1" beam of lumber, you would actually need a 2"x1" plywood beam.
Nice bench though. How many sheets of plywood is that?
Four hours well invested. Nice build.

may I suggest bee, use two 3/4" ply for the top and edgeband the corners both for stability and durability...

thats two sheets of plywood for the structure and as Timber suggested, two more sheets for the top, bottom layer of the top is normal ply and the upper top will be the phenolic i have been using all along.
I didnt need the bench to have the same rigidity as a 2 x 4 lumber since it is more of an assembly table (and somewhere to pile stuff on instead of the floor :)) hence it was more of an economical based costing rather than apples to apples costing. I realized with the same dimension i needed i'd end up using 7- 8 pcs of 2 x 4's which is much more expensive than the 2 sheets of ply, and if i used normal ply it would be ridiculously cheap.
i made a mistake with the orientation of the cross members. i just made my life harder if iam going to install bottom shelves and drawers

i just cant wait for accidents to happen
attached a scrap piece of acrylic to my cross cut sled. I lose headroom but its really only good for tenons. And i cut my tenons with the piece lying on the side instead of standing vertical
so far ive had three accidents
1.) changing the blade in a circular saw and table saw.. namamdali.. slip, ouch
2.) hastility trying to get the protective rubber thingy off a router bit. I grabbed the rubber thingy and i pulled.... and slice... nice, malinis hiwa ng TCT straight bit
3.) today... i was trying to saw off half a cm from a 4 cm dowel... i had the handsaw on one hand the my right hand had the dowel. I decided to have the stock meet the tool instead.. ehhh kumakapit , so pwersa pa ako... yan dumaplis at tumama sa blade index finger. leche.... Milk!
I just needed to edge band a 1/4" thick plywood so I routed a dado on a "liston" using the RT.

http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/Pinoy%20Handyman/1-5.jpg
I think I need more feather boards. I just used a push block to press the wood down to the bit.
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/Pinoy%20Handyman/4-1.jpg
I was going to use a 1/4" straight bit when I saw this bit below. I used it instead. What is the name of this bit?
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/Pinoy%20Handyman/2-3.jpg
As advised by Timber I routed full depth at full speed. The bit seem to work well as the cuts ran smoothly. None the less the wood was soft.
I'll sand it down and spray paint with acrylic white. We'll use it to hang button bracelets / necklaces for display.
http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/Pinoy%20Handyman/3-3.jpg

http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t347/jzltraco/Pinoy%20Handyman/2-3.jpg
I believe that's a core box (http://www.google.com.ph/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=PHv&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=core+box+bit&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=Q_EwTeuyN8iXccnJiKEH&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CDoQsAQwAw&biw=1280&bih=608) bit from the round nose family of router bits.
BTW, the locally available brand Ezcut makes both core box and roundnose. It's not immediately obvious that they make roundnose because only core box is listed on their main page. (Roundnose is linked as a subcategory of core box ... not what you would expect if you consider the short one to be a special case of the longer one.)
http://www.router-bits-manufacturer.com/rimages/52/core_box_bit_1261.gif (http://www.router-bits-manufacturer.com/core_box_bit_1261.htm)
http://www.router-bits-manufacturer.com/rimages/52/core_box_bit_1276.gif (http://www.router-bits-manufacturer.com/core_box_bit_1276.htm)
Seems that there is not universal agreement as to terms. Some manufacturers like Ezcut and MLCS (http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/orderstatus/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_core.html) call the shorter one core box and the longer one roundnose, while others do the opposite or use them interchangeably.
To complicate things, I read somewhere that in some offerings, the profile of the end is not semi-circular but rounded rectangle.
For Ezcut, it looks like cutter diameter is always >= shank diameter, unlike the one pictured.
The bit came from this Special Edition 1/2" shank set. Good set of bits for the price paid. I purchased mine thru amazon. Highly recommended at just a tad over 120 pesos average per bit.

I am thing to put some profiles on the edges of the liston to take out the monotonous look. I don't have a trim router but have a regular router and some profile bits.
What bit is best to use and can I do it on the RT?
Thanks

Whoa Jay, thats a block plane ... you mean you actually use them? :D
nice work brader, as for the profile on the edgeband, there is no limit to what router bit you want to use, you can round over, then use the round-nose or an ogee bit. try with scrap until you get the look that you like...
Bagong hasa blade pa ..... hehehhehe
Thanks Timb.
If possible I want something simple and will not damage the WIP that I have to repeat again the edge banding.
Sorry for the Newbie questions but better sure than sorry.
Can I use a hand held regular size router with a profile bit or best to do this on an RT?
Can I travel the router either direction so as not to chip the edges thus no need to use backer boards on the ends?
Which bit?

you are not suppose to climb cut on the rt, meaning you can only go one direction. used a push block or a piece of wood that is as high or higer than your piece, that will prevent the blow-out...

So it's best to use the RT.

At times like this I wished I had a Bosch Trim Router or better yet I should have profiled the "liston" before I used it for edge banding .... huhuhu. It's difficult to balance the big edge banded plywood piece on the RT.
Ok na muna ito baka masira pa and kailangan na itong board asap. At least I got to know what the different profile bits I have can do while trying these on scraps.

I did take off a lot... it was good that I had my handplane blades sharp, took a while and elbow grease, but it turned out well.
the kamagong had several cracks, hence the clamps (trying to glue them to close and lock. I'm thinking of locking them with a bowtie (dutchman,.. whats the word). bukas naman siguro, but happy with the progress as it took 3-4 hours including the chisel work, which btw makes the Narex a staple in my shop. :D very happy with them...

Unlike the master woodworkers in our forum I only have very simple woodworking needs. If I can make these as easily and quickly as I can then I am happy. They need this for displaying button bracelets and I didn't ask how they will use it but only what was wanted ( so I built it ). I prefer to at least edge band it and give some edge profiles but was declined.

Bee,
I don't even know what kind of cloth it is. It feels like felt when you touch it. Somebody bought curtain materials before and they happened to buy some scrap cloth too. One of which was this. IIRC 40 pesos in Divisoria.
I just cut it to shape then stick it with Rugby. I did not have difficulty as the cloth stays in place because it is thick enough not to move so much.

Since curing time is of the essence and it would be covered with cloth, how about using brad or those small shoe nails?
The base is 3/4" inch plywood with dadoe to insert the 1/4" ply legs. Hmmm why not. I dadoed the base to 3/8+ inch so I can still shoot some brads if I'm careful.
Thanks Jarod I'll try that. I still need to make 2 more of these and want to finish quickly. I prefer to play around with the new Pullers I just got than with sawdust and glue for now.

What's the better, easiest and quickest way to join these woods together. It's actually for a simple table for dirty kitchen use, nothing fancy. Will Kreg pocket holes be ok and strong enough? Wood is 1 3/8" x 2 3/8".

how long are the legs Jay? and how far apart... if the table is both short and small, no need for stretchers. but if the legs are apart more than 24" and taller than 16", you might need them for added support.

Timb they just want to use it to put a stove for cooking outside. The legs are 28" high and I reckon the top will be something like 46" x 24". Most probably they will want another layer on the bottom part also. If they were not in a hurry I would have had chance to practice mortise and tenon but they specifically said they don't want this to be an epic build and want it quickly ..... :) .

Box shelf
Wife and kids vacationing. Had some time after work so I decided to surprise my youngest by making her a box shelf on the wall atop her desk. She's been asking for it and SWMBO's been looking at those expensive rack system. I kept saying I could build a much nicer one at a fraction of the price and she'd always say that would be if I ever got around to it.
Well, today, I decided na binyagan some of my tools.
First, used the Kreg jig to build the box. Then, used the miter saw to make some mitered joints for the front lipping (if that's what it's called). Made a really silly mistake that I always thought I'd never commit: instead of cutting a front strip shaped like a trapezoid, I ended up with a parallelogram!
Just got some other left-over strip (from my boatbuild) and redid that part.
Here it is, waiting for the glue (epoxy) to dry:
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Stuff/IMG00086-20110330-1904/1233821264_Q9Acw-L.jpg
Tomorrow, will plane the lip, sand, then finish.

Nice! Simple but functional. Just the way I like it. Is this your boatbuilding plywood? Will ordinary plywood work, too?
I didn't get what you mean by "front lipping" until I read the trapezoid ang parallelogram part. :p
I think edge banding is what its called.
BTW, where do you buy your plywood?

This is just ordinary plywood I got from the nearby hardware. My boat plywood would be overkill.
For the boat, I use Tuff ply which I buy from their plant in Bulacan. Before starting the boat build, I ordered the whole lot and had them delivered.

What finish did you put? If none yet and you can disassemble it, I can offer some epoxy if you bring it over. But if you won't be hanging wet stuff on it, then no problem.
How is the pipe attached? What are the dimensions of the wood? Are they stiff enough under load?

Rolling sampayan:
yes i wonder too how the pipe was attached to the ends..10 years ago i made one like this in a hurry..one thing i found out initially with this design (because the vertical support beams are thin), they rock back and fort..
what i did is attached another wooden beam parallel and on top of the piping...this secured the pipe...for the base, i made use of a 2 x 5 salvaged lumber, vertically where the supports were fastened by screws and glue.
without any finish, the rolling sampayan i made is still standing and functioning as it is intended.
i hope you made a thru mortise and tenon just to make it a little strong in place of the 2 x 5 base i mentioned.
but simple as it is, you put a smile on your swmbo's face.

03-31-2011, 12:56 PM
@doc, @balarila
The feet are 2x4s, the legs 2x3s and runners 2x2s. All undersized.
To attach the pipe I routed a hole halfway through the 2x3, about a millimeter smaller than the diameter of the pipe. Then I cut 6 2mm notches at each end of the pipe. Hammered the ends to make it taper. Then used brute force and a rubber mallet to force it into the hole in the wood.
http://joey81.smugmug.com/Hobbies/Woodworking/P1150326/1234624729_vzPYw-S.jpg
Note the crack above the pipe.
Yes, its a through mortise and tenon. I made the tenon first and found out it was it was too small (just a third of the wood's thickness). So I enlarged the top portion of the mortise.
http://joey81.smugmug.com/Hobbies/Woodworking/mortise/1234624664_cwKpF-O-1.jpg
Is there a name for what I did above?
All joints are glued only. My initial plan was to have a third runner 6 inches up the legs, but its already sturdy as it is. Overkill nga daw sabi ni swmbo.
And thanks for the epoxy offer, balarila. Unfortunately its all glued up now and won't be leaving the house. Not even sure if we can move it upstairs. :(
But I'll consider it when I build the 2nd one (wonder when will that be?).

Thanks!
I used some leftover penetrating wood stain. I think it's acorn brown (or black, can't remember). It has the color of dark chocolate, the fashionable color nowadays which matches our other furniture. I personally don't like this stain very much because it does not show off the grain since the stain really seeps into the wood. But what I do is not to sand very much so that pits and grooves of the wood will show. I end up with a shiny but textured surface somewhat.
On mounting, along the bottom of the two horizontal plywoods is a 1x1 strip on the entire length of the shelf. The strip is screwed with tox onto the concrete wall. At the top of the strip, I drilled holes and glued dowels half in and half sticking out. On the plywood, I drilled matching holes. So I just attach the shelf to the wall by sliding down the shelf onto the dowels, then resting on the strip. Should be strong enough for light loads.
But, for extra measure, I put a pair of those small angle brackets and attached them inconspicuously at the bottom edges. The half of the bracket screwed onto the wall is hidden by the shelf edge.
To make sure my holes in the wall are aligned to the strip, I always pre drill the strip. After making sure where I want the strip to be on the wall, I fix it there with masking tape. Then, I use a nail and tap it into the wall using the strip's holes as a jig. when I remove the strip, I end up with shallow holes on the wall enough to guide my drill into. Oh, and when you tap a nail into concrete, it helps to put some scotch tape on the wall to prevent chipping.

Table Saw Stand
Dropped by Wilcon this week to get some wood and rollers. Yes, expensive, but it's the only hardware open after work. Cut these pieces and tried to see if these old hands can still do mortises and tenons.
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Boatbuilding/2011040812182801/1244320235_DZhPk-M.jpg
It was fun "tenoning" on the table saw. But mortising had to be manual after the drill press. Just happened to have the chisel I bought from Mujingfang (HK).
Dry fitting.
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Boatbuilding/2011040812335502/1244324719_t63Lh-M.jpg
Then, I glued the front and back frames.
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Boatbuilding/2011040816223303/1244326260_SMQaB-M.jpg
Note that I don't have enough long clamps so I had to improvise. Seemed to work.
This morning, did the base where the stepdown transformer will sit. For the top, I inclined it so the sawdust will slide down. Decided to spray paint it to make it look lively.
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Boatbuilding/2011040909174801/1244823308_ihTZT-L.jpg
Not yet glued. Had to stop midmorning. Family time.
Tomorrow, will see if I have time to make the sides. Ran out of plywood.
I'm also thinking about staining the frame with maple, officially pronounced mah-pol in the Pinoy woodworking industry. It should make for a colorful contrast to the blue. Then I'll coat the whole thing with epoxy pag sinipag.
Nice thing about photos is that this quickie looks nice. What you don't see are all the goofs: not very tight joints, chips, nicks.

The TS just sits on the frame. Dowels keep it from sliding off but quick enough to lift off. Top is inclined so dust slides off into the back. When I have the time, I'll probably install some dust post for connection to my ShopVac. That stepdown xformer/AVR will permanently be there. I'm a paranoid about plugging 110V into 220.

Tool Cabinet. A real quickie.
Here's a real quick one: my tool cabinet. My tools have always been sitting on a garage ledge and it's getting crowded. Also spend half my time looking for a tri-square or a chisel.
Got some 3/4 plywood and went wild with the Kreg Jig. Then, slapped on some enamel. No fine-sanding (just 100 grit), no edge-banding, no pocket-hole filling. Just plain do it quick and use it.
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Stuff/2011041701334002/1260710634_gdvmSCh-L.jpg
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Stuff/2011041704360505/1260718229_ffNZGBT-L.jpg
One big lesson: Measure twice, cut once. Here, I mis-measured, then bore the pocket hole. Good thing I didn't screw it on yet when I realized my mistake. Had to drill another set of pocket holes.
http://balarila.smugmug.com/Other/Stuff/2011041701340903/1260713234_jWMSKBz-L.jpg
At least, pocket holes were strategically placed where they won't be seen (unless you really bend down or climb up looking for them).
Here, I used a pattern paper to guide me where I would drill the holes on the wall

Installed piano hinges. The door is also a box with shelves.

Still assembling the doorshelves' railing (so stuff won't fall off when opening the door). But started putting the tools in already. Ironically, the toughest part is deciding which goes where!
Note that the end of the shelves are not 90-degrees. That was on purpose so the shelves won't scrape on the opposite door when opening/closing.
Hmmm...need to figure out a way of keeping the door closed. Probably the old-fashioned "talasok". But hardwares closed today

Ahh, the wonders of Kreg jigs and power tools. This was done in one sitting. Longest part was waiting for the varnish to dry. Photo shows first coat still waiting to dry so pits are still visible. Pardon the uneven finish, Master Timber, I have neither shellac nor your patience and talent for hand-rubbing.
Applied 2nd coat yesterday and ran out of varnish so we're using the table for now, until the hardware stores open and I can get me another quart.
One mistake/lesson: When painting and using newspaper on the floor to catch the drippings, always remember to tape the newspaper on the floor. Forgot to do that so, when the wind blew, a newspaper corner stuck itself to the table.

Nice one Armand! Hope we also have a place here in Manila where we could buy good pines like the ones you have :(

tsamba lang bro...tsamba lang ;)
Thanks Rosy.
I used palochina here coz I have plenty of this wood from the printing plant that i work for (we import cheque papers).
Got any nice long pieces? ... that you are willing to sell? :)
I'm always on the lookout for long pieces, 8 to 16+ ft, but rarely find them at Timberport on Ortigas Ave. Ext. during the infrequent times I get to drop by there. (Recycled, light, and long ... what I need for a torsion box panel idea.)
Armand

@guad: sorry guad pallet size is only 32" square with 1/2" x 5" planks. Timberport is already a good source of palochina, kung wala sa kanila slim na talaga ang chance para makita ang size na hinahanap mo. Why not try Policarpio at taytay.

On that NGR stain, that can that a lot of stain manufacturers use is probably the worst can in the industry. It is designed to spill half of whatever you pour out and spill onto your floor! I really hate those cans. Product inside it is good, however.

Hi there jonathancruz68,
Nice quickie quickie project you've got there, very practical and very useful to some bulky tools lying around and most specially this chisel rack of yours, this reminded me of your previous box project, " the music wire box ", where you also installed a mic rack which really gave me an idea for some of my tools too, and now this one too, your chisel rack, seeing these simple wips of yours made me smile and said to myself I know who made this rack, it looks so familiar, he he he he , jon another cute and practical idea again, good for my screw drivers and a number of chisels too just inside two carpentry tool boxes.
Hopefully when I'm ready to do woodworking too I'll be able to use these carpentry tool sets, I'm still in the process of accumulating power tools for carpentry little by little, but then jon just keep those practical ideas coming, they are just great. :) :p

Hi Rosy. This off-topic but you really don't have to "accummulate power tools", actually IMHO it is better to start with manual tools if only because it is safer.
Are you a lady? I ask because then further applause is due.
HE HE HE HE HE sorry sir bbn,
An off topic reply for sir bbn
Not a lady, am just a simple guy who also loves DIYing too, actually I have already several manual tools accumulated all these years and some na minana ko pa sa erpats ko, then some power tools for woodworking my sons gave me for christmas or birthdays.
Aside from my painting career I'm also into metalworking/welding, actually I'm one of the bakal boys here in PHM, the user's name is just an acronym of my name and surname. I'm also from eastern Rizal like you sir bbn.
Sorry about that Bro, failed to notice your "Senior Handyman" posting rating.
Well since you're a metalworking adept power tools for woodworking shouldn't be a problem ... only problem is you should stop collecting and start the wood cutting :).
No problem there sir bbn, actually I'm reading your past posting on woodworking and even Timber's and other woodworkers here trying to learn their techniques and the tools you guys are using to come up with a very elegant and worth looking at wood projects.
In time sir bbn, in time, busy pa ako sa metal welding table project, and thanks for the encouragement and God speed.
Thanks.

Here's my latest project that took almost a month to finish due to the rains (its suppose to be quickie that's why it's here in this category).
A very very simple laptop table made of ordinary lauan woods and 3/4" plywood. The plywood was pocket screwed to its 1" x 2" edgeband and the whole table top was likewise pocket screwed to the apron. The legs were tapered cut using another shopmade tapering jig. Finished with two coats of "waxed" shellac followed by several coats of NGR maple woodstain mixed with a small amount of NGR red mahogany to achive the desired color shade. Topped with Bosny clear coat.

HI there jonathanscruz68,
OKs lang jon, someday I'll start a thread here on basics in drawing and painting and I am sure you will enjoy and learn from it, para hindi ka na ma frustrate. Also for others to learn and enjoy the art of painting in different mediums like oil, acrylics, watercolor and chalk pastel. Maganda rin pang tanggal ng pagod and stress, very relaxing too when you are alone and concentrating on your paintings.
Hey jon on a later date pa yan 'coz still plenty of projects pa to fulfill in welding/metalworking, dami pang naka line up sa garage. NYEKS!!!!!! , jon, please don't call me an expert or master on welding or so and so, kinikilabutan ako sa words na yan, I have not reached that stage yet, I have no formal training in welding, not a certified or licensed practitioner of the tool. But soon I'll be entering TESDA for some formal training. oooppps na OT na yata.
Anyway as for me watch mode na lang muna ako sa mga woodworkers and learning from their WIPs like your boxes and sofas, and others.
TO sir armand,
What else can I say on your current/done na pala WIPs, ayun nag pamalas na naman ng kagalingngan yun mama, kahanga hanga at nakakatulo ng laway.

@qguy, nice one! Please share info about the white painting and vinyl sticking. Would appreciate where you got the vinyl as well since I want to change my speaker's as well. Thanks!
White painting, not sure what info you need, I just used Pylox Can spray. White was chosen for its reflective properties.
Got the Vinyl at ACE

I do hope you used some sort of woodworking glue to your build qguy, it will definitely enhance its durability.....
Thank for the tip. I used lots of it. Pioneer Carpenters glue. I love this glue, its cheap and the kids uses it for their projects, I refill their Elmers containers with this stuff. much cheaper too and dries a lot faster.

Does a 3 hour build considered Quickie?
Well from cutting to finishing in 3 hours or less, my simple practice box... made out of tugas and maple.

Nice box Timb..your inlay is really getting better.
Did you intentionally install the hinges with the rear sticking out?

on a previous box, I tried installing it hidden, won't work. It seems to be designed that way.
in the piano box i made before, i was able to make it half protruding only. I think it looks better if installed this way.
Very very nice box Timb and with only 3 hours build time to boot. :)

Nice wood combination Timb..and the design of the box is awesome, very unique specially the one-piece lid cover. Just one observation, the sides of the hinges are showing too, is it the hinges are wide?

good call brader, that is correct. the side of the right hinge blew since the top mortise for the hinge is too close to the edge but it was ok as I gave the box away as a gift anyway.... and is well received.

kaso lapako pambili,
tipid mode ako ngayon....
Today I made this sand paper cutter and framed a 1/2" thick glass.
I spot glued 360 grit up to 2500 grit sand paper using both sides.
I'll see if this scary sharp sharpening method will be effective for me and if not then probably it's time to get some stones. Ouch ...

Unless your blade is extremely dull or nicked, 1000 grit stone should be ok, then strop if you do not have finer stones.

Thanks bro .... I will check the 1k grit stone you told me before.
Just read the manual and saw the video on the Veritas Honing Jig...
The part I'm not sure about is if I need to put a back bevel on the plane blade .... plane newbie here ... LOL
I don't know how to read shavings as an indication of blade sharpness but this is what I got ....at least better than before and the block plane mouth does not seem to get bogged down often with shavings

A little OT but, while we're on the topic of handplaning:
I bought an e-book: The Handplane Book. This book is a gem. Never realized how bara-bara I was with my handplanes. Been reading it for a couple days now and raring to dismantle my old rusty Stanley bench plane.
H A N E P !!!!!!!!
Tindi talaga pang bungad mo sa woodworking thread bro jon, pro na pro ang banat at dating, naka kainggit tuloy, haaaayyyyyyy, ang ganda kasi ng dating doc jon !!!! :p:p ;);)
