how about making it out of plywood? Yes, plywood. not your everyday plywood though, 18mm Tuff Marine Plywood...

the design...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/guitarrack.png
drawing it in sketchup to get a bearing...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/guitarrack1.png
and even made a cutlist to minimize waste.

with a jigsaw, I rough cut the pieces...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0797.jpg
with a spokeshave, I clean up the half-moon shape...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0802.jpg
then with a ruler pegged on a scrap, I drew the profile for the bottom recess.

with a compass, I drew the half-moon shape inner profile...

then I drilled three holes in preparation for cutting...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0809.jpg
from there its off to the scrollsaw...

looks fine, but I removed some front veneer and I reckon this will be a pattern instead... at least I can still use it on other projects...

First time i've seen that many plies in plywood. Looks really nice. Where were you able to get that brand of ply?

+1. Also, could those marine and regular plywoods be easily or perfectly be fed into a router table say for round-overs?

That scroll saw is a very versatile tool.

As always Top Notch craftsmanship.

04-27-2010, 03:24 PM
Migs,
the plywood is available in Paco, near the badminton area where I work :). sarap talaga pag-malapit... hehehehe
Jarod,
I haven't tried rounding them over yet, but that is my intention for it...
Jay,
thanks, yes, the scrollsaw is the tool that started me to do woodworking. was bought with the intention of modding my cpu... lol

timber715
04-27-2010, 03:32 PM
started early today (after lunch, time ng gising ko kasi yan eh kaya early... lol), I drew the template to my other piece and cut it using a jigsaw, no need to be accurate, close lang will do...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0817-1.jpg
added carpet tape or double stick tape to the template...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0818.jpg
with the template and the final piece in place, I set up the rt with a flush trim bit and set the height.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0819-1.jpg
here it is after trimming on the rt...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0820.jpg

timber715

separating the pieces, they are almost identical in shape na...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0822-1.jpg
I somehow can't avoid tears even when I scored the piece before trimming it, though minimal, I just hate it. hopefully rounding this over will remove the said portions...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0823-1.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0824-1.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0825-1.jpg
I don't know why, but my left foot is not working correctly, out of the bed, I had a slight limp. oh well, I guess that would be a good excuse to not go to work... hahahaha

timber715
04-28-2010, 12:09 AM
still upset about the imperfections caused by the tear outs, I decided to visit the lumber warehouse and found some 1/8" plywood with nice faces... decided I will go for it on the template and see how it comes out.
I cut the 1/8 ply to a bit bigger than the template.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0826-1.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0827.jpg
with a lint remover for a glue spreader, I flooded the pieces, both the template and ply.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0828.jpg
clamping everything, I will find out if things worked out ok by tomorrow or 4 hrs from now if I am still awake.

skipping several steps, due to camera battery low.
cleaned up the added face then rounded over the sides
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0840-1.jpg
sanding the insides proves to be very difficult...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0844.jpg
slightly staining to bring out the beauty of the wood...

still some time and not sleepy, I decide to apply two coats of water based poly.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0845.jpg
very eco friendly, no smell that can irritate. unfortunately it cost Php1,150.00 per pint.. but not so bad after discount...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t130/timber715/IMG_0847.jpg
does offer an nice and fast finish...

btw, here is the plywood sticker.

Hmmm .... my earlier post did not go through it seems.

I heard Timber that the Paco distributor is no longer stocking Tuff. If they still have you guys better stock up. Yes, Tuff is the best plywood in the country although it is about 25% more expensive. This is what us in the PHBYC have been using and recommend without hesitation.

Very nice color contrast, it made the appearance 100% better. It almost look like an acoustic guitar with its bindings.

As expected, nice work sir timber!

With regards to the finish that you applied, it made me realize that there are still a lot of things that I need to research on. There are so many options that it makes me confused what to use on what.

timber715
04-29-2010, 08:32 PM
don't worry Jarod, one step at a time lang. decided to use poly since guitars use the same finish...

I start today by marking the mounting screws... used masking tape to lay the marks and reduce tear during drilling.

I like the contrast on those.. nicely done. Your lucky to have gotten those minwax stuff when truevalue were getting rid of them. I was just starting woodworking then, i did not realize the value of it so i just got a can of polystain and a box of american made screws. Haay, i regret not getting more.

thanks Ben.
Migs,
hehehe, thats the thing about woodworking that I have learned. buy when prices are good, not when you need them... lol, got 5 different kinds of finish during that time.

yes it does, but with denatured alcohol as a thinner, I assume I can extend its life by a year or two more.

The 5 mm plywood I used to use cost P390 a sheet, Sta. Clara brand, which is why I said 5 mm Tuff is only 25% more at P550. Isn't regular plywood P320 a sheet? Whatever it is we should consider ourselves very lucky because plywood of similar quality in the U.S. costs something like $60 a sheet!

Great stash of finishing stuff there Timber.

timber715
04-30-2010, 12:42 AM
thanks lncc, the price I guess was comparing to 3/4" ply. from 875 each for ordinary against Tuff stuff which is 1,800.00...

Sta Clara is the 2nd best plywood for boatbuilding IMHO but way behind Tuff. Please keep in mind though guys that a boatbuilder puts having no voids in the inner plies and multiple equal thickness plies above the quality of the outer veneers. Topan Marketing, along Sgt. Rivera in QC is a distributor.

meeting the guys earlier is so refreshing that continuing the rack wasn't difficult.
after a quick nap and a long mass, I start off by reducing the waste material on the scrollsaw before going to the rt.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0894.jpg
ran the round-over bit on the inner parts of the neck part and laid-out the profile for the ends. I made a template way back when I was not busy with different round sizes, then with a knife I marked the piece.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0896.jpg
now the difficult part, freehand cutting on the scrollsaw. and since I want a tight cut, i used a microscope.... hahahaha
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0898.jpg
I later cut the excess from the other edge, it was an inch more than I needed to keep my options open. and since the seminar was so inspiring I used my jigsaw, Bosch syempre...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0900.jpg

timber715
05-02-2010, 02:58 AM
cleaned with a handplane and rounded over the rest of the corners 1st cut...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0901.jpg
then with the correct sized router bit, I cut the final profile... top and bottom.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0903.jpg
first coat of poly applied.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_0904.jpg
cleaning will follow and two more coats of poly... my plan is to keep the area that contacts the guitar neck as little as possible to prevent accidental damage...

sorry for the " extreme " delay of this project,
checking on the date , more than a month...
many factors to consider.
can't make it full time,
graduation days kasi, daming pasyenteng nagpapaganda ng teeth nila
isama mo pa yung sakit na katam (katamaran)...

actually i've finished the project last week, and just recently i that i have saved the pics to the bucket.
i did'nt save as much pics since i made this project almost the same procedure as master timber did.
the only difference is the number of slots and the upholstery, and of course the quality of the plywood
to make it look good at least, i have to laminate another 1/4 ply to the other side.
so to make the long story short here is the finished ( guitar rack ) project.
