Does anyone know the effect on the metal when icy water is poured instead of tap water on a red hot welded spot (stick welding)? - Will the metal be more brittle or stronger?

^ It's not recommended that you cool welded parts that way. That's what I always keep hearing, and 2 tesda trained welders have told me that. Uneven cooling which may lead to stress or worse cracks. (I've welded a few times but it's not up to par.)

Depends on the metal, if the metal is a high carbon (tool) steel it does "quench". On top of my head- martensite, austenite something something (paki google na lang.) After the quench, you then "temper" it by heating it again to some lower temperature. (If one "blues" a chisel when put into a grinder, the temper is ruined, it's temper is about as good as springs, not tool edges.) So... on angle bars, purlings, no it won't become "stronger" (i believe rebars have some rating.) On tool steels like on chisels (red enough it won't hold a magnet) it will become brittle and harder.

One fun thing is making a chisel out of a file =).
