I certainly could use more of it. What did you have in mind Timber?

I was thinking along the lines of safety consciousness for one week on all or most post as much as possible, citing that everything we do will have an outlook on safety. maybe we can even make a guide, a video would be nice (Moji would make a good presenter imho. :)) plus we practice what we preach of course. it is up to each and everyone to do his/her share on personal safety... suggestions are always open...

I do believe that all woodworkers are aware of these. Like me, i sometimes forget, specially when i'm too engrossed in a project.
I only stop & think when my wife shows up, looks at me in the eye, doesn't say a word but her face almost covered with a towel. he he

Suggesting lang po

I have been feeling unwell since Oct. 7 and started to have fever last oct 13. I had my checp up in Cebu Oct 9 and found everything to be normal, unfortunately I only had my blood, urine and chest x-ray tested.
it seems that my spray painting process is a bit on the hazardous side not using protective gears and I start to think if this could have caused my illness. I am not about to give up what I enjoy doing, So I have ordered a full body suit to protect me of the chemicals that goes airborne.
I will be doing a liver cleanse soon though I know it is difficult (specially self induced) it is something I need to do.
Please do your homework on safety. and once you find them practice them. I do the safety practices, just not always and this is what I get. now I will do everything to protect myself at no cost. it is actually cheaper and fun to be safe than in a hospital getting treatment.

and Because of that, I believe we really should have a safety week at least twice a year...
I propose the week of Nov 14 to 20 be our first safety week...

Your 3m mask w/ organic filters does not protect you from the fumes? Or you haven't been using them?

the first time it affected me was when I was cleaning the gun already... mask off. boom sabog ako literally.
I do use the mask always, but the airborne particles cling on my skin and affects me the same way only slower than direct inhalation. So I decided to get some of these for my spray painting purposes...

sad to hear that Timber. Get well soon

spray painting's optimal conditions include being enclosed in a darftless space free of any dust particles. Which usually mean being trapped in a zero ventilated area.
Aside from chemical toxicity i guess fire hazard is another problem

hmmmmm my wife might think iam nuts if i wear that suit :))

yes, but since I got sick, my wife insisted I get some.
yes as you described the ideal conditions for painting is bad for the health unless a dedicated paint booth can be had which has good ventilation and exhaust system. and even that would require adequate protection, so I tell you guys, its best to be safe than sick. take nec steps to protect yourself. or use wipe on na lang... :D

Are these suits available here Timb? I hope it's comfortable to wear because it could be hot when suit is on.

I haven't check Jay, I know how hot it gets here, and I sweat a lot so fast that I really would hate wearing these, but I would rather wear that than stop finishing with the spray gun...
nice to have you, its been a long while. finally on vacation? see you tonight sa skype ha? shopping time na ulit...

Yeah I'm on leave na at last.

When I spray paint in the garage I had 2 fairly sized electric fans I use as fume extractors. Now that you mention safety am thinking of probably having a proper extractor. I see lots of second hand fans in your area.

Seems like Flu is common these days as I caught it too since last 2 days ago.

Safety is also something I take very seriously now though I must say I found out the hard way. Remember Timb when I caught the scary hand allergy from being exposed to Turco, Thinner, Mineral Spirits and Metal. It was so nasty that it took several months to cure and not to mention cost involved. So now I make sure I use these strong Nitrile Gloves when handling mineral spirits etc.. as I have more respect now for these type of fluids.

Trust me guys when I say the gloves cost is nothing compared to the agony and money I spent on the hand allergy. I could have purchased a Makita Thicknesser if I added a bit more.

In fact I use gloves most of the time now.

yeah I did order hose gloves also...can't really know how important these are until it gets to you...
met someone without any strength on his grip, found out it was due to handling finishes and paints. those chemicals can really hurt you. now I know better...

young workers especially hobbyists disregard healthy safety because they are young and feel young.

of course we cant blame for these attitude since the effects of these chemicals we use especially in finishing have cumulative effects and may not be apparent right away.

its good to know that each chemical we use whether for industrial purpose or home use has available material safety and data sheet for browsing over the net.

and as expected, woodworkers tend to accumulate chemicals that are fire and explosion hazard.

as a pathologist (pathology=study of disease) and someone who also teaches environmental pathology i wish you all in observing health safety as foremost for every project you endeavor.

@timber

get well soon bro...please cut back on those puffs.

I feel so sorry for the guy. But I'm glad he shared his experience for us to learn from.

I couldnt agree more. especially when using powertools, concentrate ONLY at the job at hand... nothing else.
