Is that a planet or star? Seems unusually big/bright/isolated for a star.

I was winding down in the shop when my wife called me to see it. I think the start on top was the North Star ... just guessing though but it was very bright and it was in the north.

What is that thing, Timber? Is a top for the scrollsaw? I'll probably be making one too soon. Was working on the scrollsaw to wind down, thinking of what needs to be fixed or upgraded.

it is just a piece of 18mm MDF to raise the cut portion on the unused part of the scrollsaw blade...

I got feedback about the Bosch TS
GTS 10 Prof. - Table saw SRP PhP 43,800
seems like a decent price, I looked the saw online and it is 220V and works as well as the 4100 which is 110V.
Golden wanted to know if people would rather get a 220V or 110V since a transformer is needed for it.
from what I have seen, the 4100 is ahead only with the riving knife, build is basically the same though...

moji
05-19-2010, 01:31 AM
How big a difference would the saw be without the riving knife?

timber715
05-19-2010, 01:33 AM
basically... nothing that I am aware of. plus you get the warranty and support from Bosch Phils.

moji
05-19-2010, 01:36 AM
I have never used a table saw before, what is the role of the riving knife anyway?

timber715
05-19-2010, 01:42 AM
what I think is the biggest advantage of a riving knife compared to a splitter is during dado or non thru cuts, otherwise they work the same way...

moji
05-19-2010, 01:58 AM
i see, but if routers get to do the bulk of dadoes then i guess its fine to get one without the riving knife...hehe gotta start saving up!

timber715
05-19-2010, 02:04 AM
btw, the 4100 has a safety fork as well... haven't used it for a while since I shift from thru to non thru cuts often...

moji
05-19-2010, 02:07 AM
I'm guessing the portable stand is not included with the model that is going to e available here?

timber715
05-19-2010, 02:13 AM
in fact here is the letter from Golden with the suggested prices...
Good day Sir,

Below are the prices of the following Bosch saw and workbench (please give us feedback from the members):

GTS 10 Prof. - Table saw SRP PhP 43,800
GTA 3700 Prof. - Work bench SRP PhP 24,000
GTA 2500 W Prof. - Transport and work bench SRP 31,200
GTA 60 W Prof. - Transport and work bench SRP 18,900

As for the USA specification of the table saw 4100, the business unit might not bring it here in the Phil., because its voltage requirement is 110.
But please let us know if its really one of the table saw that the DIY group is trying to acquire, then we will ask our Brand Manager to help us get the best price for the group.

Thanks and best regards,
BeQIK

hehehe let me put it this way.... if i was to sell my saw.. i wouldnt even wanna sell it to a friend... or even an acquaintance! For an enemy.... maybe.... :)

actually baka maibigay ko to sa kinaiinisan kong tao... the only problem i have left is the table surface not being flat... ok lang if its not flat in the parallel orientation of the blade but in this case the Non-flatness is on the perpendicular orientation of the blade which simple screws up your rips and cross cut and what not

the Bump in the table is from the miter slots!!! JEEEZ... BOTH MITER SLOTS!!! BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

... lalalala think Hapi Tots :)

timber715
05-21-2010, 03:40 PM
yeah, I remember when violaine had the same concern about his Jet ts... I believe he said that he hardly cut small pieces(anything less than 4" wide I think) on it bec it scares the s@$^( out of him... hahahaha.

Louis, can a chat feature be integrated on this site?

beebeenator
05-21-2010, 04:02 PM
hahahah well i am cutting pieces as thin as one inch (go push stick , yung mas maganda compared sa iyo diba? hahahah) My ZCI does decently too.

The problem is when my stock's width passes over the miter slot. thats when the squaredness scews up. Coz the blade is squared reference on the table BEFORE the miter slot... so when i WANT to rip sheet goods... i cant grrr

timber715
05-21-2010, 04:10 PM
why not install a flat metal or aluminum sheet so you won't loose much on depth of cut and forget the miter slot?

beebeenator

Finally got to use the leigh jig for dovetails! haha! Just going out and doing it does make it simpler than the manual makes it out to be. Had fun doing it.

What do you use to make the router slide more smoothly on the jig? I tried candlewax, which works but only for a while..

timber715

No it shouldn't. you put wax on the fingers and the router base, both of which will not contact the wood anyway...

nice link Jay, I will visit the store today to check on Minmax machines. hope they have a decent bandsaw... :) couldn't open thier pdf files from here.
will look for mahogany too, the conference table commissioned will require around 200++ bd.ft. of it...

moji
05-24-2010, 06:08 PM
that is a whole lot of mahogany that you need..do you have a final design already?

timber715
05-24-2010, 09:20 PM
yup Migs, the design I made requires me 200 bd ft by local calculations... was able to get around 250bdft already, rough but oversized which is preferred in my opinion since I hardly encounter an s4s to be properly correct in size... some pieces were even 2 1/2" thick, by approximation I believe I should end with roughly 1 1/2" thickness for the finished parts... which is a lot better than buying 2 x 10" and having it at 1 5/8" x 9 3/4" and after cleaning ends up to 1 x 8 1/2"...
I see my muscles to improve once I start this project.... who wants to learn how to properly use your handplanes? :)

moji
05-24-2010, 11:06 PM
Big guns ka na nyan pagkatapos! Hehe but don't you have a thicknesser? :p

did you source all your mahogany in cebu?

JayL
05-24-2010, 11:59 PM
Timb you need a jointer na and the new shop. Conference table malaki na yan.

Did you find anything in Belmonttools?

I did email Bosch to check the sizes of the feed supports. If not possible I'm checking out some small items so I can hopefully join you in the waiting time. :)

I want to see how you (timber) handle a 250 bd Ft worth of table around :)

timber715
05-25-2010, 02:18 AM
hey guys...
yes Moji the thicknesser is around, but I am almost certain that there will be plenty of handplane work to be done...
Jay, yes a jointer would be a great idea now and maybe even better when the shop becomes available, but 6" ones won't cut it with these stocks, I would need no less than 12" for that matter.... something beyond my budget for the next 5 years...
I did find some bandsaws, mostly available from New Triumph in recto but in display and in full view. I did find one that had a 10 to 12" cutting capacity but it costs 115K, I am not sure if it was from AEG but is made in Germany.
there were Bessey's available but only in 8' and 9' models (yes they are 8 and 9 FEET clamps), there was one pc that had a 16" capacity but it was old and beat...
their powertool line is quite impressive and the prices ar quite comparative to manila prices, some items binondo priced pa....
Ben,
handling 200bdft isn't difficult, just find two helpers... ehehehe, but once I start on it, I see a lot of back pains. hahahaha.
I now am planning to build a thicknessser sled since I have no plans for a big jointer yet....a thicknesser stand and a guide system for it too...

timber715
05-25-2010, 02:31 AM
hey Migs, join mo ko ha pag wala kang ginagawa ha, looking for a biscuit cutter soon, thinking Ryobi... :)
yes, all mahogany is sourced in Cebu, shipping will be a killer but included in my quotation already. the design Moji is very very simple, a pair of crosses for the legs and flat top... thas it!

moji
05-25-2010, 02:59 AM
Sure!, san mo balak maghanap nung biscuit cutter?

No problem naman pala yung shipping basta kasama sa quotation..

timber715
05-25-2010, 03:07 AM
will try to ask Rolly if he can acquire one for me, biscuit na lang kulang... I meant join me handplaning hahahahahahaha....

ooohhh!! No problem! That would would be fun... How will you go about making the table anyway? Top like your workbench?

beebeenator
05-25-2010, 12:43 PM
ahhh helpers :) heheh medyo snob kasi ako when i work. For whatever reason i always prefer to di it on my own... maybe some deep seated emotional blah blah

I will be looking forward to your thicknesser sled and guide. I will wait for you before i make one :)

timber715
05-25-2010, 12:50 PM
I have always worked on my own, getting help from my wife if I needed an extra hand, but this one I don't think I can manage alone, a single slab of mahogany weighs 30kls or more, I will use no less than 7 for the top... you can just imagine the weigh I will be carrying nearing completion. All I would be needing are helpers to carry anyway. I will not allow others to touch on this to prevent accidental damages... well, maybe Moji and if you are willing will allow you too... :)
I will be building the table and sled as soon as I land in Manila.... am at the airport now in Cebu...

moji
05-25-2010, 01:59 PM
that is going to be a very heavy table indeed. How do you plan on transporting the table? You might need those transport trucks with a crane!

JayL
05-25-2010, 05:39 PM
Will it fit in the elevator? My idea is that Timber lives on a high rise building.

Probably transport it disassembled. Just like Bee did to his project. :)

timber715
05-25-2010, 06:26 PM
hehehe, I do have access to a delivery truck, the top will be removable from the legs. most of the work will be done at the badminton court since there is no way for it to fit the elevator (rough or completed). the legs could be made here at home though but the top will be both a joy and pain to make.
will draw the sketch-up tonight...
here is what I got, phone pics lang nga...
most are 8 to 10" wide and around 2 1/2 to 3" thick, lengths are 7 and 9 feet...

Daming mahogany! Are you transferring your workbench to the badminton court to work on those or just saw horses?
nope, will make iether a plywood wb or just sawhorses... so much preparation needed before the wood arrives... here is another... DESIGN... I promised the guy that I will provide the leg to look like A, which can be arranged either as a + or x... I wanted another design which is B and has three segments instead of four. work is a bit more demanding but seems nicer... I need your comments...

timber715
05-25-2010, 11:38 PM
thanks Moji, I actually like B better too, but the A model can be configured to have the same orientation as B... also A is a straightforward build while B poses extra challenges...

we have actually agreed on the design in words, but I will present him this designs so he has options before he gives the downpayment. but it is a sure thing since I have bought the materials already as per text communication... will just make it formal...
the A design actually gices the one seated at the end to have the table legs between his legs for deeper seating... it was the design element the customer wanted. will just present him a picture so he would have an idea how it will go....

yes, otherwise it will dry in 5 days... hehehehee.
I might prep the top with either sanding sealer (oil) or tung oil just to have an even color including the edges....

not sure what you mean adjustable...
the guy did the choosing for me, I told him I needed the dimensions and without insects and checks... with a forklift he plowed to the closest dimesions that fits my requirement. and with his buddy, took us another 30 minutes to go through his stock, most were passing already, we just went through his stock just to get the best ones that we can get.... these men were very friendly and very industrious, no complain nor any action that signified it. they were quite happy as we went through their stock. he even told me which to choose and some tips on how to avoid young and wet wood....

Don't procrastinate on the Kreg. This is one hell of a tool specially that Timber has a local source for screws.

Me I'm thinking about this one. Knipex ( pronounced ki nipex ). However the other models I want are 4 weeks delivery time. Arguably the best German made pliers around.

I would think so unless it's a counterfeit. Best to go with the known brands.

I once purchased a "German" made wrench set at LYS. I went to go home and halfway I turned back and returned these. I could not believe the price I got so I exchanged it for a Jap made product in the same price range. Low price and good quality German made tools don't equate.

@ moji

The Crescent tool you have looks good to me. Most probably it was in the era when Cooper Tool was preparing to move production to China. The ones with Crestoloy are the older ones.

@ moji

No I did not physically do the work but had given a lot of inputs.

@ Timer

It's not solid . Its plywood and Polytuff " masilya" , primer then painted ( designed like wood) then varnish.

The counter top in the middle stages of work. Finish will be the same as the shelves above.

Cge, but i ran out of materials.. will make one when i stock again. It's not really filler, but more of masilya. Not as tough as polituff of course, but way easier to sand and smooth.

That would help a lot..experienced painters know a lot of tricks to make the work go easier..learned a lot when i had the kitchen cabinets painted before.

Bahco adjustables are the cream of the crop. No play whatsoever in the jaws. They are OEM for Snap ON. I'll trade my Crescent anytime with these.

He's old and just do that job everyday. Most of us DIYs can't possibly cope with that. but what's good about this man is he knows how to listen. Knows a good idea when he's presented one and knows how to incorporate it. He don't have time to do lots of research but being a team player he benefits too so does everybody else involved in the project.

Would you know how to identify if these are original?

@ moji

Fakes usually are more found in very fast moving items like sockets and combination wrenches.

I have not seen counterfeit Bahcos yet. Probably too expensive to manufacture fakes for these products.

This is the 5" Vise. The 4" vise will now be installed in the mini welding table while the orange Pony will go back to the woodshop where it was originally stationed. It is not strong enough for metal working.

The reason why I'm investing on Record Vises is because they will soon be gone. It will be difficult to buy NOS once Panda runs out of stock. US vises runs in the ten of thousands and are not in my price range anymore.

Go for the 10" or 12" Bahco then because you already have an 8 incher.

I was surprised to know that my friend hand carried the Ridgid Pipe Wrench I bought in ebay for $46 ( found out I could even get it less if searched further and waited a bit more before bidding on what I got now) . These sell 8-9K here new. Waiting to receive it maybe by next week pa.

This is my first ebay US purchase of a used tool. With Timber perfecting the shipping setup ebay can probably be a good source for us of used tools in the future.

I'm planning to try the Knipex plier wrench. When is the box leaving? You said end of May. Do I still have time to order from amazon?

Guys what do you think about the Finex 1000 mini gun? I'm so undecided on spray guns.

Bro,

I ordered the Knipex Pliers wrench already. I always wanted to try this product a long time ago. Will provide you the tracking number as soon as amazon issues one.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000X4J2EI/ref=oss_product

I'm still undecided on the spray gun. I posted my concerns on several forums to see if what I have in mind will suit my needs.

Thanks :)
