are the bit holders on slides or hardwood guides?
timber715
05-31-2010, 01:08 AM
the guide is composed of plywood (scraps in my case) and very very easy to make...

got the carcass sanded and painted with an Ivory color (free paint, I just saw it lying around :p)... and today I got the drawer materials cut to size waiting for hardware (slides) and bottom material to be bought. the drawers will be nothing fancy, just plain ply butt jointed and screwed or nailed (depending on my mood )...

Seen this in flesh errr wood I mean and looks better in person or in physical whatever.
Dunno why, but the color looks yummy, looks like a cake from afar :p
timber715
06-07-2010, 05:44 AM
got the top glued and cut with a CS, a bit of pain to square since I wanted it very square. edge banding to follow. I will be using the 2 x 4 on top for that...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1230.jpg
experimenting on hardwood slides, they seem to glide vry nice, even with the drawer loaded... btw, gave it the correct sized wheels that gave it the correct height...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1232.jpg
I also cut the 1/4" Narra veneered plywood which will serve as the faces for the drawers...

Are you using rubber caster wheels or plastic? I am interested with the noise kasi by the plastic ones.
Will you also be doing a new fence?
timber715

the wheels are rubber Ben and yes a new fence is in order...

got some work done despite the hectic schedule. divided the 2 x 4 to 4 pieces one of which is slightly thicker and will serve as the edge guide for the top.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1234.jpg
got two of the bottom drawers done as well but not yet mounted. one more to go but I lack the materials.

got all the drawers completed and installed. using the cheap Hafele slides for the three drawers on the bottom left, it gave me no resistance...

now I start the most critical part of this build imo... cutting the hole for the insert plate... everything starts by understanding how the router insert is made. I use a Pinnacle router plate and the rounded corners are the first thing to look at. try to find the radius of the corner, manufacturers make this differently and cutting the recess also depends of this.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1252.jpg
if I use a 1/2" bit, I would have corners longer than intended (not pretty).
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1251.jpg
what I have is the same radius as the common rabbeting bit (which is 1 3/8" diameter)
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1249.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 02:52 AM
now, since the rabbeting bit will cut 3/8" more than the bearing guide it rolls on, I would have to lay out 3/4" (3/8 + 3/8 = 3/4) less on two sides. so measuring the overall dimensions I get 11 3/4" x 9 1/4", this is where I will subtract 3/4" from.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1254.jpg
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1255.jpg
so when I lay out, my cut dimensions are 11" x 8 1/2" only.. checking double checking and marking. tomorrow pa yung cutting. I do need to sleep too... :)

timber715

after laying out the hole for the router to go into, I drill 4 holes for the jigsaw blade to enter. and with a jigsaw I cut the hole as close to the line as possible.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1256.jpg
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1257.jpg
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1258.jpg
I highly recommend you use the the Bosch progressor blades... highly!!!
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1259.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 10:25 PM
with the jigsaw in hand, I mark the corners of the top edge banding using a round-over template that I have made.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1260.jpg
then cut with the jigsaw.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1261.jpg
had options to use a template bit and a pattern bit. need to buy replacements for these.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1263.jpg
deciding to use the pattern bit with the handheld, I start by adding double stick tape to make the pattern.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1264.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 10:31 PM
often, I clamp the double tape to make sure of a secure adhesion.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1265.jpg
double checking every corner and then I check again...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1266.jpg
the first pass is made very light to avoid chipping the laminate.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1267.jpg
still using the pattern bit I cut several passes more.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1268.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 10:41 PM
with the pattern bit reaching its full depth, I remove the guide, sometimes or often the double tape works so good that I have a hard time cleaning up...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1269.jpg
I then continue using the profile I have made as my guide..
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1270.jpg
and I finish off using the template bit on the rt.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1271.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 10:46 PM
always checking and rechecking measurements, still spot on.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1272.jpg
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1273.jpg
using the rabbeting bit, I start my first pass lightly as always, then I check the fit...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1274.jpg
routing to depth, I have one hand on the router and the other on the vacuum hose to remove the MDF dust. huhuhu, look what happened...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1275.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 10:52 PM
moral of the incident, avoid doing two things at the same time and concentrate on one. or get a better dust collection.
now, since I have enough t-track, I decided to make hold down for the fence, saves space on the sides instead of c-clamps.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1276.jpg
again, make the guide.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1277.jpg
again with the pattern bit...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1278.jpg
laid-out both sides and double taped the guides.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1279.jpg
timber715
06-10-2010, 10:58 PM
cut to length, and router to depth, I try the fit...
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1280.jpg
trimmed the T-track and screwed them in place.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1282.jpg
then I move back to fixing the mistake using epoxy (unfortunately it was clear and doesn't blend well).
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1291.jpg
then I move to the drawers. cutting and fitting the faces, it gets glued and shot with the nail gun.
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1288.jpg

every inch counts in my place (you have been here) and using the T-tracks instead of C-clamps gives me 2 or 3 " more space on the side. might not be much but that is a lot for me... hirap ng maliit na space. :)

yehey!
tks timb!
here are a few pics of my previously bench top rt now a floor standing rt..like i said in another forum that a bench type router isnt going anywhere coz i am lazy to remove it there.and while its there gripped by the front vise, i cant use the other big purpose of the workbench. besides, the benchtop rt got no other shop space except the floor.
still considers this rt as a prototype of another prototype of another prototype.lol
support are gmelina and rails and legs joined using thru mortise with additional screws to hold the pieces together. stained with Ace red mahogany with two coats of PYE brand poly.
below the table is the dust and noise compartment covered on three sides using laminate floor planks. i made a bit and wrench compartment to maximise space. the panic switch is made from mdf painted red and what is fancy is the white sticker i ordered for 15 bucks..i am too lazy now to carve stickers.lost are old days when i had the motivation plus the arthritis hitting my finger joints..aww).

So the RT finally grew some legs and now got separated from the WB vise. Nice panic switch V.

i was using either the f clamps or the quick grips before to hold the fence but found something to better replace them and that is these aluminum fence clamps..yes timb..your rockler universal fence clamps are also ideal to hold the rt fence..quick and steady unlcess you have a better clamping system for your new rt! (btw..whats the reason building a floor standing one?)

hey jay!
like i said, this is just another prototype.
id still like to build a table top using the aluminium plated laminates but they cost around 2grand (4x8) and also to replace those flimsy yellow plastic featherboards with either the blue rocklers or the orange benchdogs.
i am still busy at work and my woodshop is missing me a lot though i still find time to catch up by opening almost daily this site.
thanks to timb and the rest of the masters here for making this hobby enjoyable and fulfilling.
I know its never ending V. Makes me want to build one too. Maybe last quarter this year if and when I get a plate and some t track hardware.
Then sell my Bosch Mini

the portable rt has a unsightly damaged but flat top pa naman, and the mobile stand fits the 2012NB thicknesser well. I planned to make a stand for the thicknesser, but since the fit was perfect, I decided I'll use it and make a dedicated rt instead, also the bit holder I have lacks the space already(seems you need more bit space as well), this new rt provided the space to make me broke again :p., the router bits you do not use, you can lend them to me so it can be used... hahahaha, those big bits(CMT ba yan o Freud?) are gorgeous....

the big bits are made by speedway (china made but from detailed inspection they looked precisely machined) and yes they are also gorgeous like a CMT or freud and they look forward to me making doors for shop cabinets in the near soon (i dearly hope).
by the time the shop is organized then its time for me to get the 2012NB.hehe

did you freehand the groove/notched portion?
If so, then nauna yung piece to be inlaid, trace, then free hand router then stick it in?

after laying out the hole for the router to go into, I drill 4 holes for the jigsaw blade to enter. and with a jigsaw I cut the hole as close to the line as possible.

Jon I used "No more Nails" pero just to be clear, mahina adhesion sa phenolic (madulas talaga) until it fully cured. What ho;d it in place is the mitered edges that is screwed to the sides of the bottom ply.
