View Full Version : Kreg jig
My sister came home with this yesterday
Kreg K4 jig..just in time for my aquarium project

I only was able to try it out a while ago, it's quite simple to use. Here i tested it out on scrap.

And yet...no matter how simple an operation may be..if you don't concentrate on what your doing, you end up doing something stupid..

hahahaha, ay naku Moji, ano ka ba? :p
The Kreg jig is one very very good woodworking tool. What I like best about it is that it eliminates the need for glue to cure or dry. There are 3 or 4 Videos from Kreg and these are available in the net.
Funny thing is i just finished watching the dvd that came with it..masyado ata ako na excite..
At least the damage was superficial(no matter how bad it seems). I did not drill all the way through so the body is still ridgid.. i still can't forgive myself though..:(
What happened?
In my excitement i forgot to raise the drill block to the proper height. I was drilling 1-1/2" stock..:(
You can probably clean the holes a bit and the epoxy it.

Jay,
Does Vise Grip have a similar clamp like those of kreg? The ones with disks instead of jaws for aligning the two pieces to be joined.
If you don't need very strong clamping pressure I suggest you get the auto adjusting Lockjaw Pliers with swivel pad. Then find a round plate and epoxy it to the top jaw. What you have now is better than the Kreg Clamp.
Yes at Panda. 2 sizes available. Lockjaw brand w/ swivel pads.

The swivel pads look solid..so maybe no need to epoxy a bigger plate.

les than K iirc...
What I have noticed with Lockjaw is that the thicker the material becomes the less clamping force it gives. Sometimes I have to still adjust to compensate.
Try to close the pliers without material and see how strong the force needed to lock the jaws. Now clamp it on a slightly thicker surface then again notice the force required to close the jaws. It's less so is the clamping pressure. Yes there is no need to adjust for different thickness but I think what the manufacturer did not state is that the clamping pressure is not totally consistent on all material thickness .
Aside from this the pliers are great. However if you require excessive clamping pressure like that needed in metal works then very few grip pliers can touch the US made Vise Grips.
Are those clamps expensive?
I think 870 for the big one and 570 for the small one.

got the opposite result, mine clamps the same force on all thickness, what I notice is if you are moving while clamping or clamping soft materials, the initial lock will produce the final force. so if you lock it slightly tilted on one end, the final pressure will differ than clamping a smaller piece and have better control. I can actually clamp my hand(meat side near the thumb away from any bone) and have the clamp lock and remove my hand out of it.
Can you pls try clamping with no material and see if the closing grip force needed is the same as with a material.
I feel mine are harder to close w/o the material.

your statement is correct depending on the material you are clamping. it seems harder bec you are technically clamping a solid piece (the pads in this case), now if you use thiis to clamp wood, it has movement to a certain point, thus giving you the impression of lighter clamping force. you can try clamping something solid like a steel bar, it should give the same result. we can not really be so accurate since we are not measuring the pressure exerted, but by feel, I would say the are pretty much the same pressure under all thickness.

http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab219/timber3715/IMG_1666.jpg
of course since we can't accurately measure them, this becomes just an opinion... ;)
By the way my clamping pressures are adjusted to the max and used on steel plates only. I'll also try on wood and see the difference.
I came to notice this because of my need to close the pliers after use to hang in the hooks.

are you clamping two metal pieces during this use?
timber715
06-29-2010, 03:34 AM
imo, if you are clamping two pieces or more and there is a prevalent gap between them, the clamp will engage it to lock even before the materials are held tight. try clamping two flat metal objects like coins maybe, they should give you the clamping force you are looking for since no gap separates the pieces...
are you clamping two metal pieces during this use?
Yes. I've used these only on metals so far.
Works great when I need to do quick tack welds. Vise grips are too cumbersome to use sometimes. Both pliers design have their own strength and weaknesses.

Sonny,
Some questions on Kreg screws.
1. If i will be mainly using 1/2 - 3/4 local plywood, do I still need the Kreg screws. or will the local hi-lo screws be ok?
I;m trying to lessen my inventory on screws, so I may just get some fine threads in case for hardwood. I'm still undecided on the leghths, maybe 1", 1.5".
2. Do I still need a right angle clamp, especially for bookshelves/cabinets build?.
1. like we discussed previously, you can use the local Hi-Lo screws, but we suggest you use the screws supplied by kreg first since it pulls the materials together and when the glue dries, you can replace them with the local screws.
2. 1 1/4" is the rec. length for 3/4 materials. you can move from there
3. the right angle clamp should make your work a little easier but it isn't nec.

From the posts, I guess you built the door frame before routing the inside profile. You seem to have experience on wood as it seems and well tooled I assume.

Willy, the gypsum screws you have are for steel. you should get the screws that have a "slice" sa tip just like the square driven screwd you have for wood.

Saw a similar display at the True Value in Makati sometime last year. Nice, organized, and exciting at first, but the prices are repellent. One look at the price (pick any box) will drive you away from the whole display and create a long-lasting force field around that aisle.
If the screw pictured is being suggested, might as well use Fischer 4, 4.5, or 5 mm screws from Ace, or Hafele equivalent, or #8 or #10 or #12 stainless steel "metal" screws from To Suy and the like. While not cheap, the price would be much less than the astronomical prices in that display.

Darn office net security, I can't see the pic! Oh the rigors of waiting til dismissal time...must be patient.
UPDATE: I could now see the screw pics above. What I think is a better alternative would be a screw with flat flanges (no tapered portion or V shape). This causes the pocket hole to break unless countersunk which is a waste of time.

the vacuum hose hole should be located a little below for better dust collection..but happy with the results.
just some scrap pine screwed onto a laminated mdf base..and base is clamped to the wb...
now not so much chips flying here and there...good to know that there is newer kreg jig complete with dust collection port but i dunno if its 100 percent efficient at catching all the woodchips.

Most MDF assemblies are fastened ala "but-joint" using confirmat screw or brad nails so unless you want to use the pocket hole joinery, Kreg would be a good choice.
Confirmat screw: (I think this is locally available as Timber showed me a sample before)
http://cache-images.pronto.com/thumb2.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.pronto.com%2Fim ages%2Fproduction%2Fproducts%2F39%2F89%2Fshop00218 478702178b9944933e47446-1299837397_50x249.jpg&wmax=180&hmax=180&quality=80&bgcol=FFFFFF http://www.mcfeelys.com/images/pages/confirmat_illus.jpg
If you assemble melamine cabinets or work with particle board or Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), these unique fasteners have been specially designed to make your life easier. The large shoulder beneath the head locks the shank in position to minimize the possibility of board failure. An extra-long stem on the specially designed screw caps fits a hole in the drive recess, preventing most accidental removal. Screws require a pilot hole through both pieces of material. The 7x50 screws are recommended for use with 3/4" materials. 5 x 40mm screws require a 5mm pilot hole and are used with 1/2" material.
http://www.mcfeelys.com/confirmat-mdf-screws
Spax type MDF screw:
http://www.ultimategarage.com/frontpage-images/spaxsidingscrew.jpg
MDF/Edge Arrow Point Partial Thread Screw - specifically engineered for MDF. No pre-drilling necessary. Slender head with the ribbed underside easily countersinks into the material. Silver zinc finish. These fasteners are currently being changed by Spax from pozidrive to torx drive. The appropriate drive bit (mfg by Festool / Wiha) is included by Ultimate Garage with the sale of each box of screws.
http://www.grampianfasteners.com/Products.aspx?Cat=14864912
http://www.ultimategarage.com/spax.html
The local Hi-Lo screws are hybrids of the two above :D
In my opinion, the difference in shapes of this screw is based on what joinery and not more on the material. The confirmat is great for butt joint with straight pilot holes and no extra tapping is required. So if you're using pocket hole on MDF using local Hi-Lo, just use the Kreg jig and screws for set-up and drilling then use the local Hi-Lo afterwards. I believe this is what Moji also did on his aquarium project.
If possible, best is if you can setup a test joint on a scrap.
I think Hafele has those confirmat screws..To Suy probably has those as well. If you can find the right length then i think the Hi-Lo screws will work. just use your kreg screws to hold the two pieces together and when the glue dries switch them with the Hi-Lo's.
timber715

if the intention is a permanent glued joint and consists of long side edges then you don't need screws. face panel to side edge depending on the weight it needs to hold or lenght of connection, screws can be bypassed as well.
kreg pocket hole joinery isn't really good on MDF since it weakens theMDF giving little material between the screwhead and the jointed piece. For this application, a straight and thru hole with as little removed other than what is needed will provide the best option...
this mdf stand previously made uses no screws , just glue asnd is plenty sturdy...

I have owned and used all of the above one time or another. If one works on 3/4" plywood then he/she will be very very happy with these kits.

JayL, are you saying that this is not practical for materials other than 3/4" plywood?
Thanks.
What he means is that the kreg jig is a great system for joining 3/4" ply. But it is also a good way to join other thicknesses be it plywood or hardwood.
