HELP! Proper way to insulate concrete structure

Hey - hope you can help me, I'd like to do this project right and avoid wasting my money.

I have a concrete block house with poured 6" cement slab roof. I would like to take a stab at insulating the master bedroom so I can lower my airconditioning costs and make it more comfortable.

The walls are concrete block (finished) and the ceiling currently is unfinished (I wanted to give it two seasons to check on leaks).

Right now the ceilings are 16 feet high I would like to put in a drop-ceiling around the 14 foot level to decrease the amount of volume we have to mechanically cool. I would also like to insulate all the walls - and then cover everything (walls and ceiling) with 12mm gypsum board (drywall)

All the fancy new materials aren't available yet here in the Philippines (like the Kingspan Kooltherm boards) (or if they are - i can't find the distributors)

So I was thinking I might just go to Wilcon and buy some 20mm PE Foam (double sided) and cover my walls (using metal studs), and then install a drop ceiling with metal studs and somehow affix the PE foam there as well (leaving a 2 foot gap before the concrete roof starts)... But I have a few questions if someone wouldn't mind sharing their knowledge...

- Is PE foam good to use for wall insulation? I can't find the R Value for it.. Is 20mm thick enough or should I do two layers? Do I need a vapor barrier? Should we just affix to the wall with something like liquid nails?

- Should I use metal parlings for the studs? and then affix the gypsum board to that?

- For the ceiling - how much insulation should I use? Can I stack 20mm sheets? How do we attach the insulation to the parlings and then the (heavy) gypsum board. Does it matter which way the reflective side of the foam is located?

- Is there a better type of insulation I should be using?

- My ceiling will have a 2 foot space between the drop-ceiling and the cement roof - do i need to put a hole in the wall and get a blower to suck the hot air out?

In short - would like to OVER insulate this space, and do it right the first time. My foreman will be directing the work, but I'll be doing the shopping - so would like to know what's best to get.

THANK YOU so much for feedback!

there is a particular subdivision that has a homeowners' association (hoa) that strictly enforces the deed of restrictions. the owner did a major renovation of his house. one of the renovations he did was place trellises/arbor in front of the house. the hoa cited this as a violation because the posts of the trellis/arbor exceeded the setback requirements (something like 2 feet). the posts were built WITHIN the property of the owner (and the trellises are also within the property). the hoa is demanding that the owner moves back the posts and trims the trellis and also pays the violation fees. the arbor/trellis is not obstructive in any way and is not at all harmful to the neighbors.

does the hoa have the legal right to enforce the deed of restrictions? what should prevail, hoa rules or city rules?

Hello PHM!

I'm Drew. I stumbled upon your excellent forum while I was surfing (and dreaming) about the Kreg pocket hole jig. I'm a real estate broker and I have absolutely no wood working experience aside from fastening drywall with a dewalt drill (my first power tool).

I'm interested in making furniture and give them as gifts to friends and relatives close to me but I don't know where to start. Some might say I dont think too straight or conventional but I purchased power tools first before taking any lessons or doing anything with hand tools first. ( I got a circular saw, an angle grinder, jig saw, palm sander last week)

I'm thinking its not a chicken and an egg kind of debate and that i should get the knowledge or exposure first AND THEN buy new power tools. But what to do? They're here in my room giving off a salivating smell of brand new tools.

I have a coffee table project and a shelving project in mind but now i find myself hesitant and kind or scared/ overwhelmed with how i'm supposed to tackle it. Table i saw as inspiration have the legs spread out at an angle and not just straight down and vertical.

Any advice would be great. I'm off to search for wood working books. Maybe I'll buy wood this weekend. I dunno I'm stuck in my brain.

Looking forward to going thought all your old posts. If you remember old posts that you think would help me, I'd gladly appreciaty links so I dont miss them.
